Intrusion Detection System, (IDS):

Intrusion Detection Systems are complex software applications, which monitor network (NIDS) and host (HIDS) activity using various techniques, such as 'intelligent agents'. Many current applications will not only detect misuse but also identify a known pattern of attack, or attack scenario.

Intrusion Prevention System, (IPS):

Intrusion Prevention Systems are any device (hardware or software) that has the ability to detect attacks, both known and unknown, and prevent the attack from being successful. There are five different categories of IPSs that focus on attack prevention at layers. The five types of IPSs are inline NIDS, application-based firewalls/IDS, layer seven switches, network-based application IDSs, and deceptive applications.
